Dean Scheibel (Lecturer of Communication Studies & Chair of IDAP at LMU’s College of Communication and Fine Arts) will discuss his recent project, The Mythic Student Hero and the Dreaded Lit Review.
About the Author’s Work
The Mythic Student Hero and the Dreaded Lit Review is an analysis of 30 students’ comics, in which the students reflect about the process of writing an academic paper for Dean Scheibel’s introductory course in research methods. The students’ comics cast themselves as heroes where they confront their fears as they fight the “dreaded lit review” and deal with expectations of perfectionism by procrastinating. In students’ struggles, they are often guided by supernatural beings who are mentors that take the form of fairies and gods. The comics follow Joseph Campbell’s work on mythology and the hero’s journey.
About the Author
Professor Scheibel has taught at Loyola Marymount University for 27 years. His published research includes work on sororities, graffiti, rumors, fake IDs, rock music, pelvic exams, and surfing. For the last twenty years, he has played bass guitar and sings for Back Pages, a rock-and-roll “cover band” that often plays at Loyola Marymount University. Professor Scheibel uses comics in the courses he teaches. He is currently working on a graphic novel about the film industry with professional illustrator Keith Tucker.
About Faculty Pub Night
Students, staff, faculty, alumni, and any members of the public are all invited to the 2017-2018 series of Faculty Pub Night at the William H. Hannon Library. Eight LMU professors (four per semester) are selected annually to discuss their latest publication or project in a comfortable setting and format that welcomes diverse perspectives for an inclusive conversation aimed to educate the entire community.
