“Mismeasured” is an exhibition curated by the students in HIST 5400, Senior Seminar, taught by Carla Bittel (LMU Department of History). The exhibition examines the 19th century preoccupation with measuring human character through the sciences of physiognomy and phrenology. Visitors will learn how this once-popular use of science and technology defined race, gender, health, and criminality in ways that still impact us today.
The exhibition is on display Mar. 16 – Sep. 25, 2026 in the Terrance L. Mahan, S.J. Gallery (library level 3). Visiting hours are Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Please check the library’s website for holiday hours.
