Library Essentials for New Students

Here at the William H. Hannon Library, we seek to foster excellence in academic achievement through an array of distinctive services that enable learners to feed their curiosity, experience new worlds, develop their ideas, inform their decision-making, and inspire others. As a student, you have access to incredible research support, comfortable spaces, and diverse collections. Whether you are a new student or a returning student using the library for the first time, here are some of the essentials you need to know.

Collections

As a student, you have access to millions of books and articles, thousands of streaming films, and rare and unique materials from our special collections. In addition to research resources, we have a popular reading collection, a children’s book collection, and a robust collection of DVD, including films not available on popular streaming services. Your OneCard is your library card; and since many of our resources are digital, you don’t even have to come into the library to access most of our journal articles, e-books, and streaming media.

Your MyLMU account provides you access to our online collections. Begin your search on our library homepage or go to the library’s online catalog.

Fall and Spring Building Hours

The library building is open late throughout the week and even later during finals. Pay close attention to our website around the holidays to check whether we might be closing early. Here are our regular building hours:

  • Monday-Thursday: 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 a.m. (the next day)
  • Friday: 8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.
  • Saturday: 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.
  • Sunday: 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 a.m. (the next day)

Research Help

We offer a variety of ways to get research support. Whether you need help finding, evaluating, or using credible sources, our librarians are here to help. We offer:

  • 24/7 live chat: Get help anytime using the chat widget on our homepage
  • Research consultations: Meet with a librarian in-person or online by appointment. Book a time that works for you!
  • Information desk: Get on-the-spot in-person assistance in the Level 1 lobby or call us at (310) 338-2790.

If you’re more of a do-it-yourself researcher, we have created research guides (called “LibGuides”) for every major here at LMU, highlighting the best databases, books, and videos for your subject. If you need additional help using our resources, we have a YouTube channel dedicated to using library resources, including how to find books and articles, use printers, or reserve a study room.

Special Events and Exhibitions

We host more that 40 events and exhibits each year. Follow us on Instagram or sign up for our monthly newsletter to stay up to date on new services, collection highlights, workshops, exhibitions, and events.

Additional Essentials

  • Borrowing equipment: In addition to books, e-books, databases, and streaming videos, you can also borrow MacBooks, Chromebooks, cables, phone chargers, adapters, headphones, projectors, and video cameras.
  • Interlibrary loan (ILL): If we don’t have the book or article you’re looking for, we can request it from another library for free.
  • Special Software: Many library computers have Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Office Suite, and other software.
  • Printing: Every year, students get a $20 printing credit at the library. Black and white: 10 cents per side. Color: 25 cents per side.

As always, if you need with anything at the William H. Hannon Library, don’t hesitate to ask us.
