Announcing the 2024 IRDL Scholars

We are pleased to announce the 2024 cohort of scholars for the Institute for Research Design in Librarianship (IRDL) Online. This year, the William H. Hannon Library will virtually welcome 29 scholars from 18 states and Canada on May 27June 7 for two weeks of lectures, private consultations with research experts, and hands-on activities. Learn more about each of the scholars on the 2024 IRDL cohort web page.

IRDL Online is a year-long experience designed to bring together a diverse group of academic and research librarians who are motivated and enthusiastic about conducting research but need additional training or other support to perform the steps successfully. The IRDL scholars learn about various research methods (both qualitative and quantitative), scholarly publishing strategies, and tools for strengthening their personal learning networks.

The entire IRDL Online program is hosted virtually. “We look forward to facilitating the continuing education and network-building of this growing community of librarian-researchers. The high-quality projects conducted by the scholars raises the bar for the level of research that can be accomplished in our field,” said Marie R. Kennedy, serials and electronic resources librarian and project director. Kristine Brancolini, dean of the library, developed IRDL with Kennedy and serves as project co-director.

Launched in 2014, the Institute for Research Design in Librarianship is a continuing education program for academic and research librarians designed to create a growing community of confident librarian-researchers. The program begins with a summer research workshop that provides novice researchers with social science research training and is followed by a year of peer and formal mentor support in completing a research project of the scholars’ design. For 2022-24, the summer research workshop, traditionally delivered as an in-person experience, has been converted to an online format, thanks to a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

IRDL Online is a partnership among the William H. Hannon Library at Loyola Marymount University, the School of Information at San José State University, and the Statewide California Electronic Library Consortium. More information can be found on the IRDL website.
