(61)

Please join us in welcoming Linta Kunnathuparambil to the William H. Hannon Library! Linta is our new Systems and Digital Initiatives Assistant. In order to get to know Linta a little better, we asked her a few questions about coming to LMU:

How do you think your prior experience has prepared you for this role at the William H. Hannon Library?

The position is unique in that the I get to directly work with the four librarians in the Systems and Digital Initiatives department. As a current MLIS student with an interest in digital libraries, I think of this as an incredible learning opportunity. My background in digital humanities as an undergraduate student at UCLA will be useful when assisting the Digital Scholarship Librarian on faculty projects. The experience with managing digital collections at the Fowler Museum and experience with digital preservation and access of digital collections at the Getty Research Institute will aid me in working with the library’s digital asset management system and LMU’s institutional repository. Given the nature of my previous jobs, I am accustomed to working with rapidly changing technologies and various digital systems. Whether you are working in the digital library environment or not, all library staff now rely on library integrated systems and digital tools to do their job. I look forward to exploring new systems and workflows through my new position.

What goals do you have for this year as the Systems and Digital Initiatives Assistant?

One of my goals for this year is to learn how the Systems and Digital Initiatives department interacts with all the other departments within the library. I think it will be a great way to meet other library staff and learn more about their jobs and experiences. I also want to attend a lot of LMU events, particularly the educational ones hosted by the library.

My other goal is to figure out how I can continue to adjust my MLIS coursework to meet the needs of the position. I plan on taking a seminar on open access next semester because of my work with Digital Commons. I also hope to take a course on content management systems as I will assist the Systems Librarian with managing the library website.

What projects will you be tackling first?

One of my ongoing project is to add content to Digital Commons, LMU’s institutional repository. This mainly involves familiarizing myself with the repository functionalities, understanding how content is organized within Digital Commons, and learning the different workflows for ingesting faculty publications and electronic theses. Another task is to assist the Digital Scholarship Librarian with facilitating different faculty projects. The current project involves learning new tools like Photoshop and Scalar, an open source publishing tool.

What are you currently reading/watching/listening to?

I am currently reading a novel called Pachinko written by Min Jin Lee. It is about different generations of a Korean family living in Japan during the Japanese colonization. I am also a big fan of the Harry Potter series and like to reread the books when I get the time. I just finished the first season of “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” on Netflix and it was amazing! The next on my list is the new season of the anime “Attack on Titan.” I am really into the soundtrack of the Malayalam movie “Thattathin Marayathu” right now. Also, the soundtracks from Studio Ghibli films!

We are delighted that Linta has joined our staff at the William H. Hannon Library. Linta is part of the Systems and Digital Initiatives department. You can contact her at linta.kunnathuparambil@lmu.edu.
