Last Minute Ideas for National Poetry Month

Happy National Poetry Month, Lions! As you start to buckle down for finals, don’t forget to take some time out to relax and celebrate the beauty of poetry. Library Student Assistant Christiana Davis has selected six titles for you to check out this month.

You can start by checking out Poetry in Motion, directed by Ron Mann. If you are interested in the works of Charles Bukowski, Allen Ginsberg, or John Cage, you will be sure to enjoy this film. It is a Canadian film that focuses on Northern American poetry, Black Mountain, avant-garde, and minimalist poets.

Furious Flower: Conversations with African Poets records the stories of African poetry within twentieth century. The film features over twenty-five writers, and introduces contemporary African American writers. Poets like Rita Dove, Amiri Baraka, Sonia Sanchez, Nikki Giovanni and Michael Harper are featured. Furious Flower offers viewers a plethora of different types of African poetry. This four-volume DVD is available at the Circulation Desk.

Paper Dance: 55 Latino Poets features work that comes from various places within the Latin world including: Cuba, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. Emerging Latino writers Julia Alvarez, Judith Ortiz Cofer, Juan Felipe Herrera, Pat Mora, Alberto Alvaro Ríos, Luis J. Rodriguez, and Tino Villeanueva pen their experiences of race, double identity, and family. This book is currently in basement storage but you can have us bring it upstairs for you by selected “Request” in the Get It section of the catalog record page.

In Outside the Lines: Talking with Contemporary Gay Poets, Christopher Hennessy interviews gay writers of contemporary American poetry. These encompassing, craft-centered interviews reflect the diversity of their respective arts and serve as a testament to the impact gay poets have had and will continue to have on contemporary poetics. This e-book is accessible for all LMU students, faculty, and staff.

Out of Bounds: British Black and Asian Poets uses the voices of Black and Asian writers to illustrate places like Scotland, England, and Wales all through imagery and sensory detail. This book is available in our main bookstacks (level 3).

Finally, The Pearl of Dari : Poetry and Personhood Among Young Afghans in Iran [e-book] takes readers into the heart of Afghan refugee life and hardship in the Islamic Republic of Iran through a portrait of the circle of poets who make up the ‘Pearl of Dari’ cultural organization.
